Remembering and sharing one of my special projects with you! This painted penguin was created in 2004 as part of the "Penguin Parade," a public art event and fundraiser sponsored by Youngstown State University in conjunction with the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. The penguin was chosen as a motif because this charismatic bird is the mascot of the local Youngstown State University.
For this fundraiser, a total of 31 painted penguins were created by artists, whose designs were selected by a juried committee. These larger-than-life penguins were approximately 6-1/2 tall and were positioned at prominent locations throughout the Mahoning Valley. After being on display for several months, they were auctioned off and took new homes in public places and private collections throughout the United States.
My penguin, titled "Your Garden Variety Penguin," was purchased locally by Sky Bank and donated to Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park (Youngstown).
